Answering the need for improved accessibility for residents with disabilities, the Cleveland Housing Authority completed ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) renovations on a 6th Street duplex unit.
The accessibility improvements include enlarged bathrooms with roll-in showers, grab bars, wider entryways and hallways, and lower kitchen cabinets.
The accessibility enhancements are designed to make entering and using the apartment easier for persons with wheelchairs or who have mobility impairments. For residents who are unable to access a traditional bathtub/shower unit, the roll-in shower is much safer and easier to enter and exit.
The accessibility renovations were funded through a grant from the Tennessee Housing Development Agency and capital funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
The improvements implemented in the 6th Street duplex will be incorporated in future ADA renovations to help ensure accessibility and increase independence for residents.
